Mental Health & Emotional Well-Being during Covid, 2021

‘Mental Health in 2021’

After 18 months of uncertainty, isolation and fluctuating restrictions, it is no wonder many of us are feeling more stressed, anxious, depressed or just out of sorts.
As expats we have the added nuances of friends leaving and losing our robust social circles, family support networks being far away, and the inability to travel home easily for funerals, weddings or just some good old fashion hugs.
Many of us may have also experienced ‘collective anxiety’ or ‘contagious anxiety’ in the workplace, home or on social media.
COVID has been really tough for many.
This free one-hour talk will cover aspects of mental health and emotional well-being and the impact Covid has had on individuals and society. The better we understand what is happening to us, our family and friends, the better equipped we are to handle life.
More importantly we will look at what can be done. Strategies, tips and take-home tools to do at home in moments of stress, distress, panic or just a crappy day.
Let’s create ‘collective calm,’ ‘collective harmony’ and ‘collective positivity.’
Thanks to Emma Carroll for capturing this talk.

The Covid Impact on Mental Health & Emotional Well-Being, Chiang Mai.

After almost 2 years of uncertainty, isolation & fluctuating restrictions, it is no wonder many of us are feeling more stressed, anxious, depressed or just out of sorts.
This one-hour talk will cover important aspects of mental health and emotional well-being and the impact Covid has had on us as individuals and a community. The better we understand what is happening to us, our family and friends, the better equipped we are to handle life.
More importantly we will look at what can be done. Strategies, tips and take-home tools to do at home in moments of stress, distress, panic or just a crappy day.

6pm-7.30pm.

Here is the same talk but presented at a different time and location.

Asia Pacific Writers Conference, Indonesia.

On Tue 24th Oct at Ganesha University, a 3 hour (or more realistically, 4 or 5 hour) drive from Denpasar airport in Bali (through stunning mountains I might add), I was on a panel as part of the 3-day Asia Pacific Writers and Translators 10th anniversary conference.

This was my 5th one.

The topic of this 90 minute panel was:

Belonging and Writing:
Exile, Homecoming and Return Narratives.

Just a small topic!

I was one of three on the panel and last minute became the moderator also as ours had to head back home south to Sanur. I was worried that being both moderator and panelist would be a little tricky with Osamah Sami on the panel – an award-winning actor, writer, director and stand-up comedian, with a memoir Good Muslim Boy and movie Ali’s Wedding. A lively and confident personality as you might expect, but also a humble young man born in Iran to Iraqi parents who moved to Australia as a teenager. The panel was rounded off with writer and PhD candidate from Queensland Australia, Sophie MacNeill.

What unfolded quite naturally was a juicy discussion on ‘home’, ‘exile’, ‘belonging’ and ‘identity’ from a Muslim Iranian, Iraqi Aussie, a born and bred Australian Aussie of Irish decent, and a Jewish Australian expat living in Asia. As you can well imagine then, questions of belonging and identity were about as straight forward as our panel’s participant’s stories. The audience seemed to really enjoy the discussion and had plenty of questions for us. Thanks to everyone for coming down and thanks to the panel for their honesty and courage in their stories. The 3-day conference was as always, full of incredible authors, editors, translators and publishers. Northern Indonesia was such an incredible place to host such an event, most of us having never adventured to this area before. Here is (some of) the 200-strong gang from over 23 countries.

Every year I take a photo of me with the AP banner, so here is this year’s….

There are many workshops on offer throughout the conference. I feel so fortunate to be meeting with such experienced people in the industry. I went to ‘Editing: An Insider’s Guide’, hosted by Cate Blake from Penguin Random House and Ian See from University of Queensland Press in a small group where we had the opportunity to listen, learn, share and ask questions.

Monash University, Australia.

The Monash University staff have been following my career since I graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor Social Work in their Caulfield Campus.

I also graduated from LaTrobe University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Social Science (Major: Law, and Minor: Sociology). Members of the Social Work department decided I would be a great mentor and invited me to speak to post grad students and final year students on the work I have done since university and the opportunities available.

Come and hear me talk about my experiences in working in homelessness, drug and alcohol and mental health in Australia, volunteer work in Vietnam and India, my life in Cambodia and my world now as an author, writing therapist and yes, still a social worker. The sky is the limit.

If you are a uni student and want to join, message me. It is almost at full capacity with over 30 signed up to date.

Monash University, Social Work department, 24th May, 5pm 2017

Romi Grossberg - Author, Counsellor & Public Speaker

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I love public speaking! I am passionate about sharing my knowledge as a therapist on mental health and emotional health – empowering people with the skills and confidence to lead a truly exceptional life. Whether I am speaking as an author about my life in the slums of Cambodia, as a guest speaker on emotional well-being and practical self-care strategies, a conference presenter on mental health, or Professional Development to schools and companies, I am known for my raw, honest and comfortable approach to the microphone.

I am so fortunate to have been invited as a public speaker at various conferences, events, festivals, on television and radio, all around the world from Italy to Australia and New Zealand, and across Asia including Thailand, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, Philippines and China.

I rarely get nervous speaking in front of crowds, in fact if I am being honest, I absolutely love it, with one exception – TEDx! Did I love it? Well absolutely, what a high. But was I nervous? Oh my goodness! This is public speaking at a whole new level and to top it off this was my first major public speaking event! If I was going to become a public speaker, why not start at the top?

TEDx Phnom Penh

‘Dance Your Life Around’ – The power of music and dance to heal a broken generation in Cambodia.

Presenting at TEDx was flat out terrifying. The strict time limit, the fact that it goes live worldwide, and to add to the pressure I decided I wanted my amazing boss, the shy and humble Cambodian-American deportee KK to join me for an interview AND I invited a group of teenagers to choreograph a dance piece of their true life stories to bring up on to the stage. So it was not just my speech I needed to worry about, but explaining the importance and prestige to ‘my kids’ – street kids who worry about where their next meal is coming from, and me feeling slightly ridiculous panicking over schedules, timing and precision.

In the end they were amazing, of course. They are always amazing. This was the first time they had choreographed themselves and told their stories the way they wanted to. This short piece of choreography was the inspiration of what became a 90-minute theatre production that toured to Melbourne Australia in 2012 and Auckland New Zealand in 2013.

Education Conferences

I get a real buzz from presenting at education conferences because I am aware of the great impact I can have on large groups of international teachers at once. I can share, upskill and empower educators to confidently take home a new toolkit of knowledge. The Cultures of Thinking conference in Australia and the PHASE Asia Pacific (Physical Education, Health & Wellness, Athletics, Sports, and Experiential Learning) conference in Hong Kong are two such examples where I got to share my resources on mental health and social-emotional learning, where the teachers became the students and remembered how scary it can be to feel like a lost teenager. Importantly, they leave the conference inspired, confident and resourced to empower all students – and this is where the biggest impact of all can be made.

Below you can see some of my public speaking presentations.
